From our low-barrier, client-choice food pantry, to access to cooking tools and classes; to free seeds and plants and a community garden in which to grow; to examining root causes of food insecurity over a shared meal, everything at MHC centers around food. MHC works daily to build a community where food is accessible, equitable, and just, because access to healthy food is a basic human right.
This year brought the largest increase in food costs in 43 years, putting common household staples like eggs, milk, flour, and bread out of budget for many. While recent increases to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits are certainly helpful for folks struggling to afford food, it is often still not enough.
In Monroe County, 16% of our neighbors experience food insecurity , a rate higher than the state and national average (12% and 10% respectively).
Through our low-barrier, client-choice food pantry, MHC works to meet the immediate need for food in our community - but that need is growing.
Since January, MHC has seen a 46% increase in the number of folks accessing our low-barrier, client-choice food pantry. In 2021, MHC served 55,365 patrons; this year, as of the end of September, we have served 62,898. This increased need is coming at a time of decreased funding to support essential services like food banks and food pantries . We need your help.
A generous, anonymous donor will match all donations to MHC from now through the end of November, up to $10,000. Your donation, and your impact, will automatically be doubled. Can you help MHC increase access to healthy food for all?
