This year, we are raising funds for Make Me Smile, a preventative mental health project designed to give young people the tools to manage life’s challenges before they reach crisis point.
Make Me Smile is a vital peer-to-peer mental health awareness project that gives children the opportunity to understand and talk about their mental health. Delivered to Year 6 students, the programme helps children identify and share coping strategies for handling stress, anxiety, and other challenges in a safe, open environment.
Through creative activities and storytelling, students are encouraged to discuss their emotions, recognise the support networks around them, and build the resilience they need to face life’s ups and downs. After participating, Year 6 students become Mental Health Ambassadors, leading sessions for younger students and creating a culture of mental health awareness throughout the school.
The project also includes a fun, memorable activity where students create a "Make Me Smile" face to help them remember the importance of self-care and positive mental health. The project culminates in a school-wide celebration, where children share what they’ve learned, reinforcing the peer-to-peer support network.
Mental health issues among young people are rising, with 1 in 5 facing mental health challenges (NHS, 2023)—that’s 20% of every classroom. By giving children, the tools to understand and manage their emotions early on, we can prevent problems from escalating and help them develop lifelong coping strategies. Make Me Smile helps reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, fosters empathy, and creates a supportive school environment where children feel empowered to seek help and support one another.
To bring Make Me Smile to even more primary schools and reach even more young people, we need your help to make it happen!
Just £500 can empower 60 children with vital mental health support. With £10,000, we can reach 1,200 young people, your support makes all the difference!
