1 in 3 women and 1 in 7 men will experience domestic abuse in their lifetimes. Getting to safety as quickly as possible is crucial.
Fleeing is a time of high risk for survivors and their children, so we must act fast to help them reach a domestic abuse refuge. From there they can begin their journey of healing and recovery. By taking on the Race 4 Safety challenge you will be helping more survivors reach safety in time.
Claire’s Story - How a survivor of domestic abuse now volunteers to help others:
The first ever call that I took as a volunteer was a complex one. It was a lady that really was in danger, frightened and desperate for help. I was able to call her back and tell her that she’d been accepted into refuge. She was crying with joy; she was so happy and that was really moving and humbling. I felt like I’d made a difference. Most of the calls aren’t this intense but every now and again you do get one that is. To be able to tell them that they’ve got somewhere safe to go and have a chance to rebuild their lives in safety, it’s very moving.
