The Sahara Marathon is an international sport event to demonstrate solidarity with the Saharawi people. It started out in 2001 and is organized by the Secretary of State for Sport, Government of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic with the help of volunteers from all over the world. It includes the standard-distance marathon and shorter distances of 21km, 10km, 5km and the children’s race to make it as inclusive as possible. This is a race to prevent the Saharawi people from being forgotten.
Since 2009, Sandblast has been the official UK promotional partner for the Sahara Marathon, recruiting runners each year to join the race in the desert along with hundreds of other runners coming from all the corners of the world. The Sahara Marathon is Sandblast's annual awareness and fundraising event in aid of its pioneering after school Desert Voicebox project-giving refugee women and children unique opportunities to develop their potential to have a brighter future.
