Help us change children's lives through learning to sail

We have provided thousands of much-needed on-the-water and classroom training to pupils from local Isle of Wight primary schools over the past few years. All for free. We would like to extend this provision to get more island children into boats!

The Trust has delivered thousands of free sailing lessons to Isle of Wight primary school children. They arrive never having been in a sailing boat, but leave with their RYA Level 1 or 2! We help children develop their skills and self-confidence, and in some cases change their life forever.

Story

The Sea View Yacht Club first started offering a programme of local school sailing around the Millenium, at the request of Lord Mottistone, the then Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight. This programme involved local school children sailing in Mermaids on a Saturday morning.

The current schools sailing programme was launched in 2017 by the then Commodore, Michael Smith. The aim was to provide training sessions free-of-charge to local primary schools during the school week. The initial programme provided 15 places for 10 weeks during the summer term to Year 5 students from Nettlestone Primary school. This proved so successful that requests soon followed from other schools.

2021 was the most successful year yet with over 220 students from seven primary schools engaged in the programme. Participating schools included Nettlestone, Brading, Oakfield, Haylands, Bembridge, Newchurch and St Helens. All participating students achieved either RYA Taster certificates, RYA Stage 1 or Stage 2 certificates.

We are hoping to expand the Schools Programme still further in 2023 by adding more schools and increasing the number of sessions provided.
