Story
Walk 1 mile a day this September. Make every step count.
This September, we are inviting you to take on a simple but powerful challenge. We want as many people as possible to walk 1 mile every day for 30 days to help us raise vital funds for Friends of Seaview.
Whether you walk solo, with friends, or as part of a team, every step you take will help create safer and more supportive spaces for young people with additional support needs right here in Edinburgh.

About Seaview:
Seaview Centre provides specialist care and support for children and young people with complex needs. The team offers tailored short stays and residential breaks in a safe, nurturing environment. These stays give young people enriching new experiences while providing families with essential support when they need it most.
Friends of Seaview is the dedicated charity that raises funds to enhance what the centre can offer. While our focus has recently been on our therapeutic garden and outdoor sessions, our attention has now shifted to a piece of equipment that is urgently needed inside the unit.
We are working to fund a specialist safe space bed. This is something that will make a direct and immediate difference to the daily lives of the young people who stay at Seaview.
What is a safe space bed?
For children with complex needs or sensory processing disorders, a standard bed often isn't enough to keep them safe or calm. A safe space bed is a custom built, soft walled environment designed specifically for young people who may be at risk of falling, hurting themselves during the night, or who become easily overwhelmed.
These beds provide a secure, sensory friendly area that helps reduce anxiety and supports emotional regulation. By creating a "cocoon" effect, the bed helps a child feel protected, which leads to better sleep and a much calmer environment for both the young person and the staff caring for them.
Our Goal: £12,000
We have set an ambitious target to raise £12,000 to bring this equipment to Seaview. Because these beds are highly specialised and built to withstand high impact while remaining soft and breathable, they are an expensive but essential investment.
The Impact:
By hitting this target, Seaview will be able to provide:
20 to 25 additional nights of support each month.
Increased access to short stays and emergency breaks for young people.
Peace of mind for families knowing their child is sleeping in a state of the art, secure environment.
Why It Matters: Cathy’s Story
"Hi there, my name is Cathy Raeburn and I’m the parent of a young man who used to go to Seaview as a child. He is now 30 years old and living in his own house with 24 hour support.
Seaview did so much for my son. He was very well nurtured and cared for. They were there when I needed practical support, and I don’t know how I would have coped without them.
When I discovered Friends of Seaview, I wanted to give something back. I learned how important fundraising is to maintain spaces like the sensory garden and to support the unit more broadly.
So I decided to take on a challenge: walking a mile a day to help raise money for a safe space bed. I believe it’s something many people can take part in, and together we can make a real difference. I hope others will join me in raising funds for this badly needed equipment."
The Challenge:
Walk 1 mile per day throughout the month of September.
Ask friends, family, and colleagues to sponsor your journey.
Share your progress and photos to inspire others to join in.
A mile a day is achievable for most people, but when we join together, those miles add up to something truly life changing for the families who rely on Seaview.
