On Friday 18th of September Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales) will turn pink as people gather to celebrate and recognise all those who have saved the lives of others through the gift of donation. Organ donor families will be joined by people whose lives have been saved and transformed through organ and tissue donation, patients waiting for a transplant, and the incredible specialist nurses for organ donation, dialysis and transplant nurses and their colleagues. Together those taking part in Turn Yr Wyddfa Pink want to amplify the message of the importance of organ donation.

As well as providing a chance for families to come together to pay tribute to their loved ones, Turn Yr Wyddfa Pink aims to achieve two things:

1. To encourage others to confirm their decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register to help save lives. Someone will die today waiting for an organ transplant. The UK transplant waiting list has reached record levels with over 8,000 people still waiting for a lifesaving transplant. More than 12,000 people lost their lives waiting for a transplant in the past decade. If you've registered your decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register, most families support their loved one’s decision (around 90% of families). This drops to around 50%, when a family does not know what their loved one's decision is. Registering a decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register gives families the certainty they need to support their loved one’s decision. Most of us would accept an organ if we needed one. 2. To raise money to help support Organ Donor families and patients who need a transplant and to advance research and education in organ and tissue donation so more lives can be saved. Your support for Turn Yr Wyddfa Pink will support activity in North Wales and the Northwest of England. Your support may help fund additional support services for a family experiencing grief, patients waiting for or who have received a transplant; additional equipment to facilitate transplantation; new education schemes to help hospital staff learn more about organ donation; or research programmes to improve transplant outcomes.

Thanks to your support, NHS Blood and Transplant teams can push the boundaries of what’s possible in donation and transplantation. Thousands of steps will be taken towards the summit of the mountain, together everyone involved will make a symbolic step towards helping create a future where every patient gets the organ or tissue donation they need, and every donor family gets the support they deserve.
