Story
A team of fundraisers from Lancaster University will be raising money for Amnesty International UK this year and training to get ready to go on the Morocco High Atlas Trek. Over the course of the year they'll be holding public collections, organising bake sales, taking on personal challenges and loads more to raise money in support of human rights.
Home to rocky gorges, high altitude settlements and incredible scenery, the High Atlas Mountains are a trekkers paradise. The team will tackle extreme temperatures and tough climbs but be rewarded with varied landscapes, delightful village stays and spectacular views of the entire Atlas range and the Marrakech plains beyond. Your challenge will end with well-deserved celebrations in Marrakech, a wonderful chance to experience the vibrant Moroccan way of life.
This is a multi-day trek to significant altitude, led by experienced guides, climbing on rocky terrain with several hours of trekking each day. It will be tough but the experience of a lifetime!
Participants on this challenge will need to raise a £1,940 for the Amnesty International UK Charitable UK Trust.
Amnesty International UK works to protect people wherever justice, freedom, truth and dignity are denied. We defend human rights whenever and wherever they are under threat and bring perpetrators of abuse to justice. We protect individuals at risk, fight for the unjustly imprisoned and prevent torture. We support marginalised groups including women, refugees, LGBTI, and other minority groups.
Some examples of issues we are currently working on include:
'I Welcome' - We work to create a fair and effective system for migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in the UK (and abroad).
Women's rights - Human rights are basic rights that every person on the planet should be entitled to but many are routinely denied to women and girls. Deep-seated discrimination and social traditions often set unequal power relations between men and women. And some human rights will be denied to a woman on a daily basis (access to education or healthcare) creating multiple obstacles women face over and over again.
Human Rights in the UK – from opposing laws rolling back our right to protest, working with our Belfast office supporting campaigners in their quest for justice, to supporting refuges settling in the UK with our Football Welcomes programme, we work tirelessly to support human rights at home.
