David and Donald first met three years ago when David’s daughter Olivia was diagnosed with a brain tumour at just sixteen months old. Donald was the paediatric neurosurgeon who operated on her and this is where their story together starts...
As David says “The professionalism and the capabilities of Donald and his team are unbelievable. To be able to do in-depth operations on a brain that’s so small, and Olivia’s tumours were around the brain stem so the slightest slip and she would be permanently damaged.”
It’s been a journey since Olivia’s first operation, with the tumour returning and amazing little Olivia and her parents continuing to battle on. The relationship with Donald and his team at Nottingham Children’s Hospital continues and Olivia had her most recent operation at the start of this year, done again by Donald.
David and Donald are joining together to support the Big iMRI Appeal. The appeal aims to provide the first ever MRI scanner that can be used during operations at Nottingham Children’s Hospital. Called an Intra-operative MRI or iMRI for short, Donald says “It will help us surgeons get the last bit of cancer lurking around a corner and allow us to make sure we can tell cancerous areas even if they look like normal brain tissue when we operate.”
