Operating since 2007, our 220 trained Volunteers have provided care and support to 340,000 people. 11,300 clients have received in depth medical and welfare support. Anyone can become vulnerable, whether they are homeless, suffer mental health issues, are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or are separated from friends on a night out. SOS NI works in partnership on the streets of Belfast providing Safe Spaces for anyone in their time of need, reducing pressure on the emergency services and creating a safer city for everyone.
Northern Ireland has the highest suicide rate in the UK, in 2017, 242 clients came to the SOS Bus seeking support with poor mental health and suicidal thoughts. 70% of weekend admissions to A&E are due to substance misuse, in 2017 Volunteers provided 945 brief interventions on board the SOS Bus. Homeless clients often come to the SOS Buses for provisions or for simply someone to talk to. Our volunteers provide an unconditional listening ear to every individual and every cup of tea comes with a conversation.
