Story

Hi Everyone –

I am running the Great North Run for the very first time in memory of best friend and Mum – the fabulous, extremely talented and caring Julie Ingram.

As some of you may already know, my beautiful Mum sadly passed away on 6th November 2017 at the young age of 54 after contracting Sepsis.

My mum has battled and BEAT cancer three times – absolute warrior! The first time – at the age of 17 – my Mum was diagnosed with Nasophrangeal cancer which is a very rare type of head and neck cancer. After ungoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she received the all clear!

Then – this time 42 years old – she was diagnosed with breast cancer. But once again she fought it and got the all clear.

Once again my Mum was diagnosed with Nasophrangeal cancer at 53 years old – a slightly different cancer type which affected her in her youth. Myself, along with my Dad and Brother were super confident she had the courage and strength to fight it once again and in true Julie style she was again given the all clear! Amazing!

Whilst the journey to recovery had started, her immune system was low from numerous counts of treatment which caused her to contract an infection deep within her bones which was incredibly hard to reach and led to Sepsis. After a four day battle, my Mum passed away peacefully with myself, Dad and Brother by her side.

Sepsis is an extremely quick-moving infection and can attack the body within a matter of hours and stats show it has been found to be the second biggest killer in the UK. I’ve never ran this distance in my life and running is certainly not my forte but in true Ingram style I will give this 100% in order to hopefully raise further awareness and support new treatment and research in the future.

Thank you so much
Giorgia x

Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.
