Story

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a huge effect on charities across the UK. Thousands of fundraising events have been cancelled and many charities, particularly smaller ones like Peace Brigades International UK are struggling to maintain services because of this huge reduction in income.

At PBI UK we are seeing a drop in our income, while threats and violence against human rights defenders increases. PBI's work cannot be put on hold. We exist to fight alongside activists seeking justice, peace, and human rights in some of the world’s most dangerous places. With the pandemic hurtling towards them, these places are only getting more dangerous. We are seeing a decrease in income and an increase in service need, a deadly combination for such a small charity.

Many of the defenders we work with have pivoted completely
to the essential work that will keep their communities alive. They are stepping in to support vulnerable people in ways that their governments can’t (or won’t) – giving access to water, food, sanitation and health services.

They can't do it alone

Our global community must come together for the most
marginalised and at-risk. PBI and the human rights defenders we support are at the frontline of the crisis, and we need your help.

We need to act NOW.

PBI is raising money for the essentials, like food for
human rights defenders exiled in Costa Rica, soap for social justice centres in the heart of the Nairobi slums, and technologies to keep in touch with activists in the remote reaches of Honduras.

If you are in a position to help people who have so few resources of their own, please join PBI's global community of activists, and donate to my challenge today. Let’s protect human rights defenders, for the benefit of humanity as a whole.

The 2.6 Challenge, launching 26 April (what should have been the 40th London Marathon) aims to save the UK's charities. Many of these charities have had to reduce or stop services at a time when vulnerable members of society need them most; thousands of staff have been placed on furlough and many charities will not survive the next few months. Want to make a difference? Join the challenge and become a home hero today.
