As spring approaches, we are now training hard for our half marathon. Your donations and support mean a huge amount to us, thank you :) x
So.. why are we doing this?
Sepsis kills 44,000 people a year and affects 260,000. This is more than breast cancer, bowel cancer and prostate cancer put together, yet awareness of the condition and it's symptoms is still low.
Greater awareness and quicker diagnosis could save 14,000 lives and result in 400,000 fewer days in hospital per year, saving the economy as much as £2.8 billion annually.
Laura-
As some of you may know, I had Sepsis in March 2017 following a complication from a simple UTI infection. This resulted in me spending 8 days in hospital and needing monitoring from the critical care team. Before this happened to me, I had never heard of Sepsis.
The onset of Sepsis is fast, and every hour counts as your body starts to attack itself and it’s major organs. To put this into perspective, I went from feeling ok and at work, to having a fever of 41 degrees and being physically unable to walk within the space of a few short hours.
Overall, I was extremely fortunate that the fast response from my family and a quick diagnosis from doctors, meant that I was able to promptly start the treatment I needed and make a full recovery.
The Sepsis Trust do fantastic work in supporting those recovering from Sepsis but also in proactive research and raising awareness of the common symptoms, ensuring that others are as lucky as I was.
