Cycle For Change
Campaign by Oxfam GB (RCN 202918)
This April, we'll be going the distance to break the cycle of poverty. This solo virtual event will see our Oxfam Challenge Community setting individual cycling/exercise goals and covering these between 1-30 April.

Story

What is the challenge?

Run 52 miles throughout April. That's approximately 83km and the distance of 2 marathons. I'm not a natural runner and I only began running again in March so this will be a challenge for me, the furthest I'll have ran before and it'll be good to have something to keep me going.

Why am I doing this challenge...

Oxfam continue to support 1000s of people in poverty around the world. Many far away, in another country, not always close to home, it can be hard to feel connected to their reality. But now more than ever is their vulnerability clear. The heartbreaking thought of COVID19 reaching those communities in war torn countries, living in civil unrest, still recovering from natural disasters, in the midst of drought or in a refugee camp like Cox's Bazaar. Many who live in one room for a family, already struggle to find food, have to share water sources with 100s of others and limited access to clean lavatories or washing facilities. Places like Cox's Bazaar has 40,000 people per square Km. Or Moira camp on Lesbos where 160 people have to use the same toilet.

Whilst Coronavirus doesn't discriminate in who it infects, the truth is isolating, being in lock down or dealing with the a global pandemic is not equal.

I am made so aware of how grateful I am for what I have and the global situation is sometimes too much to even think about, so all I can do is try and do my bit.

Why 52 miles...

Well... £52 can go a long way. It can buy 2 lifesaver cubes, which are specially designed water filters that give families who only have access to dirty water, the chance to filter that water and remove bacteria, viruses and pathogens. 2 families could recieved a lifesaver cube and have access to clean water for at least 6 months.

Or the fact that £52 is the cost of buying a bicycle for a young adult. Whilst I'm gallivanting around and running a few miles for 'fun', there are 15 year old girls who have to walk 25km each day just to get to school and learn. And a bike makes this a quicker and safer way for her to get to school.

Any donation is appreciated! The petrol saved on a drive to work, the cost of the weekly coffees you can no longer get, or a meal out you can't go to anymore!
