Story

My Story:

On the 7th Feb 2021, I will be doing a 7K forest mud trek AND my grandmother (who is 81, broke her Femur in October and has not been able to stand until last week) will do 100m over this week.

In remote School, we are learning about the deforestation caused by palm oil which is destroying the Orangutans’ habitat. Did you know palm oil is put into lots of things like some shampoos and chocolates. So you can also help by checking ingredients and ensuring your products are sourced responsibly and make changes if we can.

The Charity:

The Borneo Nature Trust’s mission is to protect some of the world’s last great rainforests on the island of Borneo, for their amazing biodiversity - from orangutans to clouded leopards - and the many natural benefits they provide communities both locally and around the world.

Borneo Nature Trust’s activities include:

1. To promote conservation of biological diversity in Indonesian Borneo ;

2. To advance the education of the public regarding tropical biodiversity conservation in Indonesian Borneo

3. To promote sustainable development for the benefit of the public by: (a) the preservation, conservation and the protection of the environment

Much of Borneo's peat-swamp forests have been drained and degraded by human activity, which causes the peat to dry out and become highly flammable. In 2015, forest fires ravaged millions of hectares of forest, burning for weeks on end. Vast areas of forest and their biodiversity were lost, the health impacts for local people were huge, and extensive peat carbon stores were released into the global atmosphere. Help Borneo Nature Trust kickstart their 1 million trees campaign to restore a critical peat-swamp forest ecosystem in Borneo, home to the worlds largest protected population of orangutans. They aim to grow, plant and protect 1 million trees by 2025, sequestering carbon to lead the fight against climate change and protecting a vast biodiversity-rich rainforest.
