REVEALED: Top 10 most giving areas in the UK

  • Norwich tops the list as the most giving area in the UK, followed by Bristol and Reading 
  • JustGiving has processed more than 17 million donations for charities and good causes across the world this year.  
  • The equivalent of one donation every 1.5 seconds1  

New data from the UK’s leading fundraising platform, JustGiving, has revealed the areas across the country which have given the most to charity and good causes in 2023 so far. 

Norwich tops the list as the most generous area in the UK, with one in five of the city’s residents donating to a charitable cause through JustGiving.   

Bristol, which was crowned the most generous UK city last year has slipped to number two, closely followed by Reading. Meanwhile, Cambridge residents are in fourth place, followed by Manchester and Nottingham.   

The list ranks the most generous areas of the UK based on what percentage of the area’s population has donated to a charity or good cause on JustGiving between January and October 2023.

Top 10 most giving areas in the UK  

  1. Norwich 

Knocking Bristol off the leader board for most generous area in the UK is Norwich, with one in five (22.3%) of the city’s 126,000 residents donating to charitable causes through JustGiving.   

  1. Bristol 

Moving from first to second this year, is the city of Bristol, with 19.5% of its over 399,000 population donating on JustGiving in 2023.   

  1. Reading 

In third is Reading with 19.2% of the area’s 142,000 residents donating to a charitable cause via JustGiving in 2023. 

  1. Cambridge 

With a population just over 116,000, Cambridge came in fourth as one of the UK’s most generous areas with 18.7% of residents having donated to a charitable cause via JustGiving in 2023.   

  1. Manchester 

Taking the lead for the north of Engand and in at fifth in the UK, is Manchester, with 16.8% of its over 430,000 residents having donated to a charitable cause on JustGiving in the 2023.   

  1. Nottingham 

The city of Nottingham has come in sixth place with 16.6% of its 283,000 residents having donated to a charitable cause on JustGiving in 2023.  

  1. Preston 

In tenth place is Preston, with 16.2% of its over 134,000 residents having donated to a charitable cause on JustGiving in 2023.  

  1. 8. Cheltenham 

In at seventh place is Cheltenham with 15.6% of the towns over 100,000 residents having donated to a charitable cause on JustGiving in 2023.  

  1. York  

Next is the city of York with 14.9% of its over 175,000 residents having donated to a charitable cause on JustGiving in 2023.  

  1. 10. Glasgow 

In at tenth for the UK, taking the top spot for Scotland and with the largest population on the list, is Glasgow, with 14.6% of its 616,000 residents having donated to a charitable cause via JustGiving in 2023.
