REVEALED: Top five most giving areas in Wales

  • Newport tops the list as the most generous area in Wales, followed by Cardiff and Swansea. 
  • JustGiving has processed over 17 million donations to charities and good causes across the world this year 
  • The equivalent of one donation every 1.5 seconds1 

New data from the UK’s leading fundraising platform, JustGiving, has revealed the areas across Wales which have given the most to charity and good causes in 2023 so far. 

Topping the list as the most generous area in Wales is Newport, with more than 1 in 10 of the city’s residents having donated to a charitable cause on JustGiving.  

Newport is closely followed by the Welsh capital, Cardiff and the country’s second biggest city, Swansea. 

The list ranks the most generous areas of the Wales based on what percentage of the area’s population have donated to a charity or good cause on JustGiving between January and October 2023.

Top five most giving areas in Wales 

  1. Newport

Newport has landed itself first place as Wales’ most generous city and 19th out of the whole of the UK. Out of Newport’s 136,000 residents, 12% have donated to a charitable cause on JustGiving in 2023.  

  1. Cardiff 

In second place and 25th in the UK is Cardiff with 11% of the Welsh capital’s 315,000 residents having donated via JustGiving in 2023.  

  1. Swansea

Third and 42nd in the UK is Swansea with 8% of the city’s 230,000 residents having donated to a charitable cause on JustGiving in 2023.  

  1. Bridgend

With 6% of the over 130,000 people living in Bridgend having donated to a charitable cause via JustGiving in 2023, the Welsh town has landed itself fourth place in Wales’ most generous areas and 54th in the UK.  

  1. Powys 

In at fifth in Wales and 89th in the UK, is Powys with almost a thousand residents having donated to a charitable cause on JustGiving in 2023 so far.  

Pascale Harvie, President and General Manager of JustGiving, said: “The generosity that people across Wales have shown amazes me, particularly at a time when so many people are struggling financially themselves.  

“This year so far, we’ve seen over 17 million donations to over 20,000 charities across the world, which is a staggering two million more donations than last year, over the same time period.
