Poem

Two women are diagnosed with cancer in and around pregnancy every day. Since COVID, and with the current cost of living crisis, our families are in even more need of vital, personalised emotional support throughout their cancer journey.

Story

Mummy's Star offers support for mums diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, birth, loss and beyond.

Many mums supported by the charity call their babies born pre or post diagnosis their star babies.

This poem was inspired by them. If you enjoy reading it please consider donating £1 to Mummy's Star so they can continue their amazing work. Thank you.

Ursa Minor

Once a mother bear and baby

Were thrown, as stars, into the sky

Or so the ancients used to say

And like them, you and I

You and I, my little cub

Have been thrown into the night

And without you shining next to me

Would I have the strength to fight?

It is for you that every day

I get up out of bed

For you and only you

"I'm fine" is often said

They say that Ursa Minor

Guided sailors lost at sea

A shining pinpoint in the sky

And likewise, you guide me

Because some days I just can't do it

I'm tired and I'm sad

But one look into your blazing eyes

And suddenly I'm glad

So please remember when

You're older and we fight,

That you are my little bear cub always

My shining star, my guiding light.
