The Young Adult Kidney Group (YAKG) is a peer support group for kidney patients between 18-30. Starting in 2016 and becoming part of Kidney Care UK in 2022, the group has grown to over 800 members worldwide but remains fully patient led.

Story

I'm taking on a 100km challenge again this time in the Gower, and this time in one go, sleep is for the week after all. The why's and what's for are below.

My son Thomas was born one kidney. Early in 2022 his kidney failed leaving him needing dialysis 3 times a week and looking for a kidney donor.

Luckily I was a match and healthy enough to be able to donate one of mine. The surgery took place in late 2022 and was successful.

That's not the end of the story though. Even a successful transplant needs help, there are daily daily drugs to prevent rejection and frequent hospital trips for check ups, blood tests and adjustments to medication.

Severe Illness and major surgery are hard to cope with and manage at any time but for children and young adults this can be particularly hard.

Restricting activities and separating you from your peer group and doing what is normal. This is where Kidney Care UK Young Adult Kidney Group comes in offering support to young adults up to the age of 30.

Activities such as their annual residential weekend and peer support programme are so valuable to those who are a part of the group. To be able to continue this support for the members, we need your support.

All funds raised will be used to directly support the YAKG’s activities, however if we raise more funds than we need in any given period, any surplus will be used for Kidney Care UK’s wider work to ensure that no-one faces kidney disease alone. Please note that contributing is entirely optional and there is no obligation to do so.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page to support this amazing group.
