Story

(Scroll down for English)

Helô, fy enw i yw Gareth Mainwaring. Rwy'n 16 oed ac yn ddisgybl yn Ysgol Maes y Gwendraeth. Rwy'n byw (ac yn ffynnu) gyda chyflwr genetig o'r enw Syndrom Bardet-Biedl.

Mae Syndrom Bardet-Biedl yn gyflwr prin sy'n effeithio ar 1 o bob 100,000 o bobl. Y ffordd mae'n effeithio ar fy mywyd i yw nam difrifol ar yr olwg, blinder difrifol a'r awydd i orfwyta, sy'n gallu arwain at broblemau difrifol fel diabetes ymhlith eraill. Ond, rydw i'n mynd i'r afael â'r her trwy fwyta'n iach a chadw'n heini trwy redeg a chwarae Pêl-gôl.

Ar gyfer fy nghymhwyster Bagloriaeth Cymru rwy'n dechrau ymgyrch i godi ymwybyddiaeth o'r Syndrom a chodi arian. Felly rwy'n cymryd rhan yn her We Carry The Gene BBS UK. Mae'r ymgyrch yn golygu cerdded, beicio, nofio neu unrhyw beth arall, er mwyn Cario'r Baton yn rhithwir 2000 o filltiroedd - o Land's End i John O'Groats. Felly, i gyfrannu at yr ymgyrch, rydw i a Mam yn mynd i redeg 65 milltir yr un - felly cyfanswm o 130 milltir rhyngom ni - cyn diwedd y flwyddyn. Mewn undod mae nerth!

............................................................................................................................

Hello, my name is Gareth Mainwaring. I'm 16 years old and a student at Ysgol Maes y Gwendraeth. I live (and thrive) with a genetic condition called Bardet-Biedl Syndrome.

Bardet-Biedl syndrome is a rare condition affecting 1 in 100,000 people. The way in which it affects my life is that I have a severe sight impairment, I struggle with severe fatigue and I have an insatiable urge to overeat, which can lead to serious complications such as diabetes amongst others. However, I have decided to tackle this head-on by eating a low-carb diet and keeping fit by running and playing Goalball, which is a passion of mine.

For my Welsh Baccalaureate qualification I am starting a campaign to raise awareness about the Syndrome and to raise funds. As part of my campaign I will be taking part in BBS UK's We Carry The Gene campaign. This involves walking, running, cycling, swimming, riding - or whatever it takes - to virtually 'Carry the Gene' from Lands End to John O'Groats - a total of 2000 miles! So, as my contribution to the campaign, Mam and I will be running 65 miles each - so a combined total of 130 miles - before the end of the year. Together We Are Stronger!
