Story

I am delighted to be running the TCS London Marathon in aid of Challengers on Sunday 26th April 2026!

I heard of Challengers at a careers fair in my first week at Reading University in 2017. I had no intention of working a part-time job alongside my studies (I'd only gone to help a friend!), but when I saw the smiling face of Sophie Hansen-Reading and heard Challenger's story and mission, I knew I wanted to be part of this wonderful organisation.

Challengers are passionate about providing play and leisure opportunities to all disabled young people, to enable them to have fun, make friends and try new activities while also providing vital respite for families!

I grew up with a younger sister who has hydrocephalus & spina bifida, who would have loved to attend a play or youth group like those provided by Challengers, and I know firsthand the benefits this can have on the young person and their entire family.

Working at Challengers became the highlight of my week. It was truly an honour to support such amazing young people and their families. I've kept every piece of artwork and card that was given to me over the years. And I felt so lucky to step into the role of leader at the Reading Youth scheme in 2019.

Challengers always goes above and beyond to make sure every single person who attends their pre-school, play, or youth groups feels included and welcome - no matter their care needs. They truly make such a difference in the lives of the young people who attend, and their families.

Many families who attend Challengers are excluded from other similar services due to their complex needs. However, Challengers prides itself on a non-exclusion policy which means that no young person is turned away or excluded from the power of play.

And more than that - I want to talk about the personal impact Challengers has made on my life. When I started working here, I was shy, reserved and stuck in my own head. But Challengers created such a welcoming, kind and non-judgmental environment, I truly felt able to come out of my shell. I gained so much confidence while working here. I felt able to let go, have a laugh, and join in without any fear of judgement.

So, from me, a big thank you to Challengers. You don't just change the lives of the families who use your services, but the staff as well. I will forever hold Challengers so dear to my heart. I don't think I'd be the person I am today had I never attended that careers fair. And I have made lifelong friends along the way as well.

It will be such an honour to run the London Marathon for this beautiful charity.
