The Young Adult Kidney Group (YAKG) is a peer support group for kidney patients between 18-30. Starting in 2016 and becoming part of Kidney Care UK in 2022, the group has grown to over 800 members worldwide but remains fully patient led.

Story

The story behind this began in February 2021, when my mother was diagnosed with kidney failure, also known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD). ESRD is the final, permanent stage of chronic kidney disease, where kidney function has deteriorated to the point where the kidneys can no longer work on their own. As an ESRD patient, she must undergo dialysis treatment twice a week.

It was not easy for her or our whole family to accept this at that time. I saw my mother struggle and face many difficulties due to the many medications and treatments she had to undergo, including two operations on her neck and hand. Her life changed completely during this time. However, she never gave up and always believed in herself that she could get through it. Sadly, In October 2021, God called my mother to be with Him. She left this life in peace, having done her best to overcome this difficult situation. I believe God took her because He loved her so much.

I aim to spread my mom's spirit by supporting the Kidney Care UK Young Adult Kidney Group through my participation in the Battersea Park Half Marathon 2023. Activities such as their annual residential weekend and peer support programme are so valuable to those who are a part of the group. To be able to continue this support for the members, we need your support through your funds.

All funds raised will be used to directly support the YAKG’s activities, however, if we raise more funds than we need in any given period, any surplus will be used for Kidney Care UK’s wider work to ensure that no-one faces kidney disease alone. Please note that contributing is entirely optional and there is no obligation to do so.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page to support this amazing group.

Your support will ensure that other kidney survivors don't have to face this journey alone!
