YAKG (Young Adult Kidney Group) is an events & mentorship programme providing young people with the tools and confidence to manage their health and develop into the individuals they aspire to be.
I personally found this NPO inspiring and informative, and I hope you feel the same. Your support in this fundraise for Kidney Care UK, means we can have a positive impact on the lives of the deserving young people, by contributing towards their practical, financial and emotional support and for the affected families throughout the UK to ensure no one faces kidney disease alone.
--About our Kidneys--
Our kidneys, like diligent filters, clean around 180 litres of our blood everyday!, controls the production of red blood cells, makes hormones that regulate our blood pressure, removes waste from our body through urine production and plays a part in bone health. These bean-shaped organs, about the size of a fist, work quietly under our ribs, to keep us healthy.
--What happens when they don’t work?--
When your kidneys fail, your blood pressure may rise, harmful wastes build up in your body, and your body may retain excess fluid. And when this happens you will need treatment to replace the work of your kidneys.
--Seriousness of Kidney Failure--
Kidney disease is common, can affect anyone, and there is no cure. Without dialysis or a transplant can be fatal.
--DID YOU KNOW: UK FACTS--
1. Around 3.5 million people in the UK have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
2. Uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure are the biggest causes of CKD.
3. Right now, over 68,000 people in the UK are being treated for kidney failure (also known as stage 5 CKD, where kidney function is less than 15%).
4. There are 40-45,000 premature deaths in the UK every year due to CKD (that's enough people to fill the Royal Albert Hall nine times over).
5. Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities are five times more likely to develop CKD that other groups.
6. Every day 20 people in the UK will develop kidney failure.
7. There are around 1,000 children with CKD in the UK
Every stride and pedal stroke will be making sure no one faces kidney disease alone.
