Story
Thank you for visiting our Just Giving page and supporting fundraising for Kidney Care, the UK's largest kidney patient charity.
This incredible event is not just about challenging those taking part but also about making a positive impact on the lives of others.
In September 2023, Amar Radia, a Trustee of Kidney Care and one of the longest-surviving kidney patients (having dialysed for almost 30 years) will lead a team of 50 in this ultimate capital-to-coast cycle ride.
Amar was diagnosed with kidney failure when he was just a teenager, alone and away from home. During his 2nd year at university, cycling between lectures, doctors and ever-harsher treatment, something that started as a small cough... turned into a life-threatening condition.
He was told that he would eventually lose his kidneys and rely on dialysis to stay alive. He was told not to expect to live more than about 5 years once on dialysis. He was devastated and not equipped to deal with the physical and mental challenges of the lonely road ahead.
This is a very painful memory for me. It was physically and mentally traumatic. There was no emotional or mental health support. I was entirely on my own - disconnected from family and friends. It felt like a nightmare - always thirsty and cold, always tired and nauseous.
It is one of the most painful memories of his journey and an experience he wants to change for young teenagers facing kidney failure. So that they have all the support and guidance on their difficult journey...that he desperately wishes he had all those years ago.
We need your support to ensure that Kidney Care continues providing vital support, guidance and counselling to young adults and teenagers coping with facing kidney failure and life on dialysis.
Looking back, what I needed most...was support, guidance and, above all, someone to talk to...someone who would listen...someone who would understand.
Please help us to raise £40,000 to support Kidney Care's Young Adult Kidney Group programme. The funds will be used to provide support, mentorship and counselling for 60 young dialysis and kidney patients.
Your support is a lifeline for young teenagers grappling with the harsh reality of kidney failure - when dialysis becomes their only hope for staying alive.
Your support, large or small, will be hugely appreciated and will help make a real difference.
