Raising money for Parkinson’s UK

Anyone can get Parkinson’s. It gets worse over time and there’s no cure. Yet. Funding research into the most promising treatments, we’re getting closer to a cure. Until then, we're improving life for people with Parkinson’s, and the people in their lives. Together we'll find a cure.

Story

Three ladies (all of a good old age!), have set off on a 160 mile trek across the Outer Hebrides off the North Western coastal waters of Scotland. Ruth's husband Mark is suffering from the horrid debilitating Parkinson's and the love and kindness shown to Ruth and her family at this time has been invaluable. We now want to help make someone else's life easier in the future by assisting with fund raising for more research.

We left Kenton on Friday 30th May and drove through the night to Glasgow. Train to Oban and now waiting for ferry to Outer Hebrides, isle of Barra tomorrow. First leg of walk on monday. Sampling local delights whilst waiting!!

Week 1: Travelled via Glasgow, Oban and Castlebay to arrive on Vatersay, the start of the Hebridean Way. Wow, what weather- 50+ MPH winds on Tuesday meant we had to revert to Plan D! Nearly got blown over the Eriskay causeway. We have since had 2 calm days. The birdsong is amazing - all the birds nesting the the Machair with the rabbits - it feels like Alice in Wonderland territory. Amazing people, so much sympathy for the Parkinson's cause. We even met Ian from Parkinson's UK, and he did an interview with us - he lives in the same village that we are in tonight and has introduced us to the Hebrides Struan group - that belongs to his mum - of course, he shared his grandma with our lovely lady bus driver further down the island. Beautiful scenery, wildlife, flowers - just weather needs to learn a thing or two!!!!

Week 2: We walked over the Uists, Grimsay and up in to Harris, so we have seen the watery flatlands of Uist filled with birdsong and flowers on the marsh, to the beautiful stunning white sandy beaches of the west coast of Harris, walking over the rugged Coffin Road to the rugged East Harris. Each day is so different. We are now nearing the end of our journey, with just a couple of days to go to reach journeys end in Stornoway.

FINISHED AT 3PM - WEDNESDAY 18TH JUNE. We walked in to Stornoway. The sun came out as we celebrated the end of the 160 mile trek across these beautiful islands.
