Raising money for Hospice Africa and Day One Trauma Support

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

On Saturday 16th May 8 friends (Sue, Kate, Rachel, Natalie, Jane, Lindsey, Melanie and Wendy) are cycling a total of 300 miles, on and off road, in 7 days from Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands to Wark, just south of the Scottish border, in aid of two charities - Day One Trauma Support and Hospice Africa. The target amount to raise is £5,710 - a £ for each metre of climbing they will complete on this challenging route.

In January 2024, Sue suffered a serious cycling accident, shattering her tibia and fibula. Alongside family and friends, Day One Trauma Support helped her through the early months with peer support, trauma workshops, reassurance and hope. Two years on, Sue is still in physiotherapy, and Day One continues to support her recovery through workshops and check-ins. This ride is a way of giving back and helping others facing life-changing trauma.

They are also supporting Hospice Africa. Currently, less than 10% of Africans have access to pain relief and palliative care when they need it. The late founder of Hospice Africa, Dr Anne Merriman (1935-2025) fondly known as the “Grandmother of Palliative Care in Africa,” and her team work tirelessly to change this. By training health workers from across Africa at Hospice, pain relief and compassionate palliative care has so far spread from 3 to 37 countries, allowing thousands of patients to die with dignity. But there is still a long way to go. Kate was volunteering with the team in Uganda at the time of Sue’s accident, and the contrast in access to healthcare makes this cause especially meaningful.
