Haileybury Youth Trust Uganda (HYT) is planning a run/cycle from Kizigo Senior Secondary School to its Ugandan HQ in Jinja this June. Kizigo is the current partner village in HYT's One Village at a Time project.
For those who may be unfamiliar with HYT, it is a small NGO based in Uganda specialising in promoting the use of the Interlocking Stabilised Soil Block (ISSB) construction technology, as part of a programme of affordable, sustainable and environmentally friendly development for Ugandan communities. In September 2010, HYT began work on its second ‘One Village at a Time’ project. Using the title ‘One Village at a Time’, HYT plans to assist 10 villages over 5 years. HYT is one year into its 'One Village' programme. Through these projects HYT will train young Ugandans in ISSB technology by building water tanks, classroom blocks, kitchens and other structures in their local community. In 2009, the HYT team ran a relay from their Jinja Office to Kasokoso, their first village. It was a great success as was the project itself. Many of HYT's trainee builders from Kasokaso have gone on to find employment through independent employers.
During the four months that Alex and I have spent in Uganda we have seen the fantastic effect that HYT is having on young Ugandan’s lives first hand. It is not just giving them a ‘hand out’ but it is giving them a ‘hand up’. After HYT has moved on, the ISSB technology used in each project is left with the community and the HYT graduates so that the community is able to carry on the use of ISSB. With the energy saving stoves which are installed in our kitchens, only 40% of the firewood usually used to cook is required. In Kasokaso this meant that, with the money that the school saved by buying less firewood, they could keep food prices the same despite the rise in Ugandan food prices. It is because of this that now ALL of the pupils can afford to have lunch every day. Not only this but also, through the water tanks that have been built at Kasokaso, the pupils now never have to take the one hour walk to the water well and back with Jerry cans during the rainy season. With the extra water they are also able to wash their plates every day after lunch which leads to much better hygiene.

The Event
The aim of this run/cycle is to try and raise as much money as possible for the third village in the scheme. There will be a number of other participants as well as Alex and myself, some of whom will be cycling, while the majority will be running. Participants include Timtom (the headmaster of K.S.S.), Fred and Phillip (HYT’s senior trainers), all 8 of the Kizigo Trainees, Sam (HYT country manager) and Annette and Richard (our Ugandan gap year counterparts).
Many of the participants will not have families and friends with much money available to sponsor them. For this reason we are inviting people in the UK to kindly sponsor individual team members for the challenge. Anyone kind enough to donate will receive photos of their individual, their time and quite possibly a personal note of thanks. We have also made a team member page (Musa Budimbe's page) for all of the Ugandans who are participating in the event but are unable to get any sponsorship.
Any donation would be greatly appreciated however big or small! All of the money will go straight to HYT work in Uganda.
Donation ideas:
- a single gift of £5 will provide 1 metre squared of ISSB walling.
- a single gift of £8 will buy a bag of cement.
- a single gift of £25 will buy iron sheets for covering a water storage tank.
- a single gift of £50 will provide a double bunk bed for a dormitory built by HYT.
- a single gift of £100 will train six people in block-making and masonry skills.
Our Target
We aim to raise £2,000 through the event. This money is enough to build three 10,000 litre water tanks, which will provide the next villagers with a clean, easily accessible water supply.
