Story
A man arrived at our clinic with a severe laceration to his right hand, sustained in a machinery accident. The injury was devastating: the ulnar artery was completely transected, the radial artery partially severed, and both the ulnar and radial nerves were fully transected, along with extensive damage to the tendons.
The operation lasted three hours, during which every structure was meticulously repaired. To access the damaged areas, the orthopaedic surgeons extended the incision through the palm. The procedure was carried out under general anaesthesia, with minimal use of the tourniquet due to the loss of both arterial supplies.
We reviewed the patient post-operatively on Thursday, and the results were nothing short of miraculous. The hand had regained colour, with early return of movement and sensation—signs of a promising recovery. The patient’s relief and gratitude were profound, but it was his wife’s response that touched us most. Expecting the worst and fearing amputation, she was overwhelmed with joy and thanksgiving at the sight of her husband’s preserved hand.
Without the use of his hand, their livelihood would have been severely affected. This surgery did not only save a limb—it safeguarded the family’s future.
