Story
A man arrived at our clinic with a severe laceration to his right hand, sustained in an machinery accident. The injury was devastating, the ulnar artery was completely transacted and radial artery partially done. Both ulnar and radial nerves completely transacted and much of the tendons.
The operation lasted 2 1/2 hours where we meticulously repaired every structure. To properly access the damaged structures, they had to make an incision extending through the palm. The operation was done under general anaesthesia and did not use the tourniquet as much because both arteries were severed.
We saw the patient post-operatively on Thursday, the results were nothing short of miraculous. The hand had regained colour, and there was slight movement, along with a return of sensation—early but hopeful signs of a successful recovery. The patient’s relief and gratitude were palpable, but it was his wife’s reaction that truly moved us. She had prepared herself for the worst, believing amputation was inevitable.
