Story

A place to thrive

For over 20 years Dreamland Education Centre (DEC) has been a place where children in Kimilili, western Kenya, are given a chance to thrive, learn, to be fed, clothed and to play in a safe environment. But our school facilities now need significant repair and improvement to keep up with growing demand. That's why we're taking part in the Yomp Mountain Challenge - to raise funds for these needs.

STOP PRESS!

We have some incredible news—we’ve secured match funding! That means every £1 you donate (up to £10,000) will be TRIPLED!

🎉 For every £1 you give, IcFEM will receive £3! 🎉

There’s never been a better time to make your impact go even further. Help us reach our goal and multiply the difference you make!

DEC is consistently in the top five schools in Bungoma County and we are extremely proud of the diligence and professionalism of our school staff. Through the education our children receive, they have a chance of going on to secondary school and then potentially college or university and the chance of getting a well paid and respected job. This is just a dream for many children in this rural part of Kenya where many families only survive through subsistence farming.

The education system in Kenya is going through a period of change. The government is now encouraging primary schools to offer secondary education too. DEC offers primary and junior high school education, but it needs further buildings and resources to offer Senior High School level education.

We also need to make some significant improvements to our facilities in order to maintain a safe and nurturing environment for our students.

We aim to meet these needs in two ways:

(i) Refurbishment of the central playground to provide a durable space for play. This will include paving the whole area – in rainy seasons it becomes very muddy and the children then walk mud into classrooms. We'll also refurbish the rainwater storage tank under the playground to bring it back into use. Revitalising this tank will promote sustainable practices and enhance our school’s resource management.

(ii) The creation of a new kitchen, dining room and hall. The current building is timber, constructed around 2002, with an intended six-year life span! The new building will be of brick construction and of a size suitable to serve an increasing school population.

(iii) We also aim to give more children from the local area access to education by covering their school fees (something that many families struggle with).

Yomp Mountain Challenge

This is an organised event in June that participants can join and fundraise for their own chosen charity. It's held at Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria, amongst the amazing scenery of the fells. Some of our staff and trustees will be taking up the challenge and we would love you to join us! You can donate here, or why not take up the challenge yourself, join us on 14th June for a Yomp and help us reach our target of £40,000!

Your generosity can help transform lives today and plant the seeds for a stronger, more resilient tomorrow!
