Thank you to all of you who donated to Team Chelsea Physic Garden's fundraiser in aid of the Hothouse Challenge campaign to raise funds to restore the historic glasshouses at the Garden. The overall campaign exceeded its target and raised £1,028,000 for the restoration project.
Whilst the pandemic kept us home more than we'd have liked, we still managed to cycle an amazing 7900km. This falls us short of the Pelargoniums in South Africa, but does take us to Angola/Namibia, home to the wondrous Welwitschia mirabilis, which reside in our Pit House to mirror the climates of the Namib Desert.
The Hothouse Challenge was launched in October 2020 and ran until 31 March 2021 to raise the remaining £1m needed for our Glasshouse Restoration project.
The total cost of the project is £2.75m. Prior to launching the Hothouse Challenge, we had already received £1m in support from trusts, foundations, and generous individuals. Then, in March 2021, we received news of a second-round grant of £680,700 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The Hothouse Challenge raised the final £1m to put our plans into action, with the help of The John Browne Charitable Trust (JBCT) who matched all donations of £100 or above including all donations made to Team Chelsea Physic Garden - thank you!
