Our Race to Respond liveblog is closing for today, but we’d love to hear how your challenge went!

Email us or use hashtag #RaceToRespond to let us know how things went.

Our current fundraising total stands at close to £6,000. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this possible!

18:00

Just a quick reminder that if you're out there taking part, finishing up that 10K or if you've already finished for the day make sure to include #RaceToRespond when posting on socials.

We'd love to see where you're covering that distance, and hear what made you want to take part in Race to Respond.

16:00

We're now most of the way through Race to Respond event day and I hope everything's going well for you.

More than 2 weeks on from flooding and the support required for long term recovery is becoming clear.

David Fisher, Head of IFRC's delegation to Nepal, says:

"We continue our work as fast as we can; we cannot leave anyone behind. While emergency assistance remains our immediate priority, recovery will take time. Together with the Nepal Red Cross Society, we remain committed to supporting communities as they rebuild their lives, livelihoods, and resilience,”

As events fade from the headlines and emergency response moves into rebuilding the Red Cross remains, and this is made possible because of supporters like you. The above quote comes from an account from the International Federation of the Red Cross. You can read the full account here.

Now we’re getting into the afternoon, some of you might already have completed your distance! If you have, don’t forget it’s important to stretch and cool down after exercise as well.

See our video below for a short, relaxing stretch and cool-down yoga video, to help your body recover after your challenge.

By supporting Race to Respond for the Nepal Earthquake Emergency you’re helping to support not only the British Red Cross, but also our sister Red Cross and Red Crescent societies who are also providing much needed aid.

We are just one member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, responding to crisis across the world through financial support as well as sharing the knowledge and expertise of our staff before, during and after an emergency.

The below video offers insight into how the British Red Cross operates as part of the international Red Cross and Red Crescent movement.

Race to Respond: Nepal Floods Emergency kicked off this morning, and has already raised an incredible £4,712.

As just one example, that’s enough to fund 193 shelter kits for people who have lost their homes due to flooding.

Thank you for all your support already, and wherever you are in your challenge good luck and keep going!

We're now at midday on event day, and here's some examples of the kind of work being done to help affected communities in Nepal.

The Nepalese Red Cross society has been leading on the response. You can see them in this video using a traditional 'tuin' ropeway to reach communities cut off due to the destruction of bridges and roadways.

Having responses lead by local Red Cross and Red Crescent societies is a huge part of what allows us to respond quickly and effectively when disaster strikes.

11:00am

When we run this event we have people ask if they need to provide proof that you've completed 10K to us at the end of today.

This isn't something we need, but it can be a good idea to update your fundraising page so people you’ve asked to donate can see what you’ve achieved.

If you use Strava you can connect it to your JustGiving page and sync your activity, a guide on doing this is available here from JustGiving.

You can also take a screenshot or add any other kind of update manually using the update box, visible when you’re logged in.

10:00am

Everyone ready... Everyone set... It's GO time for Race to Respond!

Today, it's your challenge to run, walk, cycle, use a wheelchair or cover any other way you like a total distance of 10K

Don't forget to use #RaceToRespond to share how your challenge is going, however and wherever you're taking part.

To get you started, here’s a quick yoga warm up you can get your challenge going with.

Warming up before physical activity is important for reducing injury and improving performance. Depending on how you will be covering your distance, additional warm up activity may be advisable.

This is not provided as medical advice, and we'd recommend you consult a physician before beginning any brand new or intense exercise.

Nepal floods: people need help now after deadly flash flooding.

Hundreds of people including children are missing, many are dead and communities have been devastated after sudden flash floods struck Nepal's Rasuwa district.

The flooding, caused by a surge of water entering the Bhote Koshi River from Tibet, swept through villages with little warning.

Families have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods in a matter of hours. Many people have been forced from their homes and are facing an uncertain future as search and rescue efforts continue.

People need us right now, and we need you.

Join Ready Set Respond on 12 September to raise funds for our emergency response.

It’s an easy way to turn your empathy into action: how and where you complete the 10 kilometre distance is completely up to you. So plan your route, start your fitness tracker and let your loved ones know they can support you.

1. Get ready by setting up your fundraising page and asking your friends, family and followers to sponsor you.

2. Get set by deciding your route and checking out our liveblog on 12 September. You have all day on 12 September to complete the distance by running, walking, swimming, wheeling or any way that suits you.

3. Share your page and encourage people to donate to support you, and help fund vital emergency response work.

You can take part with others (including four-legged companions) and if you're going solo, you won’t be on your own. Around the country, on local streets and on socials, people like you will be sharing the experience and turning kindness into action.

How to help people in Nepal?

Your support will help us respond to the ongoing situation in Nepal, through donations to our Disaster fund.

The best and quickest way to help support those affected by the Nepal floods and other emergencies around the world, is to donate to our Disaster Fund today.

We are already supporting the response to the devastating flash floods in Nepal through the Disaster Fund with donations supporting the immediate work of the Nepal Red Cross Society emergency teams on the ground.

If you know somebody affected by the recent floods, we can also offer support.

We know that when disaster hits the headlines, it can be hard to know how to help. But together we can be there for people when the worst happens. Together, we are the world's emergency responders.
