Story
The 2025 floods in Punjab are the result of relentless monsoon rains combined with sudden water releases from major dams, including Bhakra, Pong, and Harike. These factors pushed river levels beyond their capacity, causing the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers to swell, breach embankments, and submerge vast areas. Fragile infrastructure, such as aging bridges and inadequate flood defenses, further aggravated the disaster. The calamity displaced thousands of people, claimed hundreds of lives, and devastated large tracts of farmland. Standing crops of paddy, cotton, and maize were washed away, leaving farmers in deep distress. Livestock perished, power and transport systems collapsed, and schools and hospitals became inoperative, cutting communities off from essential services. Many residents are forced into relief camps, while the state undertook rescue operations with boats, medical teams, and emergency services to address the humanitarian crisis.
