In a school in Dehradun in Uttarkhand, Shrijna, a Year 8 student and a talented Kabaddi player, dreams of representing India in the Asian Games. She attributes all her wins to her rigorous training and unwavering motivation.
However, without proper nutrition, even the most determined children struggle to reach their full potential. She shares,
We often come to school on an empty stomach or with just a cup of tea. The food served by Akshaya Patra in the school is our first meal of the day.
Shrijna's younger brother, Naveen (Year 5), also attends school joyfully, although their father’s frequent absence and their grandmother’s illness often leave them without a proper meal.
The Akshaya Patra Foundation’s mid-day meal scheme helps fill this gap, making a significant difference in their lives. At Akshaya Patra, we serve hot, nutritious meals every day to 2.2 million children across India so that children like Shrijna and Naveen can focus on their studies instead of hunger. Srijna says,
The meal we get is not just tasty but also nutritious and vital for our growth. There is something different every day on the menu. I like chole and dal-chawal the most.
Naveen eagerlv agrees. He says,
The food served in school is very tasty. I eat it every day. But I eagerly wait for the day when we get rajma and daliya. These are my favourites from their menu.
In the chilly winters of northern India, poverty often forces families to choose between education and survival. A school meal changes everything. For many children, school is not just a place of learning – it is the only place they receive a proper meal for the day.
We are raising funds to support an entire school in Uttarakhand, near to where Srijna and Naveen study, providing meals to 163 children for an entire year. It costs only £15 to feed a student in India for one full school year.
