Story
Noah was only five when he was diagnosed with leukaemia. Despite a courageous fight, at the end of his first month of chemotherapy, Noah's immune system was too weak to fight off an infection and he died of an invasive fungal infection, Mucormycosis.
One third of all childhood cancers are blood cancers with leukaemia affecting more than 650 children just in the UK each year. And each year, there are more than 1.5 million deaths worldwide as a result of invasive fungal infections. There is a vital need for more research to help save lives.
Noah's Pink Balloon Leukaemia Fund finds and supports the underfunded areas of leukaemia research. Our first project is a research Fellowship into Mucormycosis, a leukaemia related fungal infection which proves deadly for up to 4 out of 5 children so the ability to diagnose fast is essential for children to stand a chance.
The Royal Parks Half, one of the most famous and beautiful half marathons, will see 8 runners take on the challenge and raise money to improve diagnostic testing and raise awareness of the devastating impact a fungal infection can have on children and adults with a weak immune system.
