UnityMK Big Sleepout and Glasswalk 2025 · 6 June 2025 ·
Glasswalk - Taking challenging steps in the fight against homelessness. Glass walking is the act of walking across hundreds of broken glass bottles.
Sleepout: Spending one night sleeping rough in a car park to experience a brief but thought-provoking insight into the challenges people face when forced to sleep rough.
UnityMK is a charity that supports members of our Milton Keynes community who are experiencing homelessness or in crisis. We need to continue to raise vital funds to support our guests who use our services and events like this make all the difference.
‘Mark* was a veteran forced to leave his home when his landlord failed to maintain it, leaving him with no choice but to sleep in a tent. Surviving on a small pension and challenged with the cost of living crisis, he struggled to find a safe place to live and didn’t feel worthy of support from the veteran’s support charities. When Mark came to us, our welfare team listened to his story, assessed his needs, and quickly provided him with a warm, secure bed in our night shelter.
After some time, the Council offered him a place in sheltered accommodation. However, it was located outside of MK and lacked transport links, making it impossible for him to return and access his support network.
Every Tuesday morning, our centre hosts a community club service—a welcoming space where anyone can find support and connection. During one of these sessions, a volunteer casually mentioned to our welfare team that they had a room available for rent. The team quicky introduced them to Mark and before long, he had a safe and affordable place to call home.
Mark’s story is a powerful reminder of how vital community is to the work we do with our guests. Without the connections fostered through our center he might still be struggling to find stable housing on his limited income.’
