Story
You may seen report over the winter on BBC national news about the number of seal pups that our volunteers were rescuing. All around the country, grey seal pups fell foul of the bad weather and those that weren't already in good shape were struggling to survive. If you missed it then you can see it here.
Last year was our busiest ever across the UK and our volunteers responded to over 850 calls from the public about seals. In the first three months of 2018 we've already attended 410 calls to seals in distress. The South West and Wales have been particularly badly hit this winter as well as the North East, Yorkshire, East Anglia, Kent and Scotland, where numbers of rescues have been building up. On the East coast, where the harbour seals pup in the Summer and Autumn there was little rest for our dedicated volunteers. Whilst not all of these alerts resulted in a rescue being necessary, the greater majority would have been checked out, with many seals being assessed and if necessary taken to vets for initial treatment and also to rehabilitation facilities around the UK.
In a month of so the common seals will start pupping and so our work will pick up again, but we'll be ready as ever to try and cope with the increasing numbers of rescues we are having to undertake. There is no financial support for seal rescue from the UK government and our own survival depends upon the support of donors and our amazing volunteers.
Please donate today to help us rescue these wonderful animals. We always need funds to replace or repair rescue equipment, cover vets bills and other expenses for some of our volunteers who need them. Your donation will be greatly appreciated and if you are a UK tax payer, completing the Gift Aid will result in the government giving us an extra 25% on top, without costing you any more. Many thanks.
