Story
Reading to Remember is a sponsored event that both commemorates the Battle of Waterloo and aims to raise awareness of the ground-breaking work done by Waterloo Uncovered on the battlefield since 2015, combining world-class archaeology with veteran care and recovery.
On July 12, 2017, the Waterloo Uncovered team, comprised of archaeologists soldiers and veterans, will relay-read for about twelve hours, the duration of the battle, in the chapel at Hougoumont farm, where the wounded took refuge in 1815. They will be reading personal and historical accounts of the Battle of Waterloo, piecing together the stories of those who fought it over 200 years ago, and for tens of thousands, lost their lives.
Most of the readers have never performed for the public before and the twelve hours exceeds even the most ambitious West End play. Long though it may be for a play, it’s a very short time for the incomprehensible number of lives lost and the effect the aftermath had on the course of European history.
By sponsoring Reading to Remember, you support the Waterloo Uncovered team whose archaeological discoveries are transforming our understanding of what happened at Waterloo as well as the lives of the soldiers and veterans doing the archaeology.
