Story

Hello,

Thank you for reading this fundraising information and hopefully offering help or donating towards our cause.

The Paediatric Orthotic service is over 100 years old and it is time to modernise some of our technologies to benefit the children we treat. We provide essential custom moulded Orthoses (Often known as splints or braces) to children like the wee boy in the media gallery pictures above wearing a walking brace, who has spina bifida and would be unable to walk without the leg braces we make for their growing bodies. The other boy in the media gallery pictures is wearing a spinal brace to help with his scoliosis, a curvature of his spine. The spinal brace helps to keep the curving spine straight during growth. This help the body to develop as well as possible for future adult life.

Currently we have to cast children like these guys pictured using Plaster of Paris to make their custom orthoses (splints/braces) to help them walk. This is a messy and long process for the children, as you can see in the picture below.

By investing in new computer aided design and manufacture (CAD and CAM) technology, we can create a significantly improved experience for these children every time they visit the hospital for their treatment. The CAD and CAM technology removes the need for plaster and dramatically reduces the procedure time. It also reduces the manufacture and design time and its cleaner and better for the environment too.

We will be fundraising throughout 2022 working towards this goal.
