Story
Care extends well beyond the hospice walls, with nurses visiting patients and families at home as well as sharing their expertise with GPs, care homes and local hospitals. This ensures that anyone facing life-limiting illness receives the care and support they deserve.
For those dealing with the impact of a recent diagnosis, there are opportunities to meet others who are on a similar journey. We support people to take part in a range of activities from relaxation and exercise classes to gardening, art, cooking, and talking groups – helping them to live well for longer.
Others might need to stay at the hospice in Worthing for a few days or weeks to get help with complex symptoms. While their symptoms are eased and their families are supported, patients can receive physiotherapy, complementary therapies and emotional and practical support so they return home feeling more comfortable and independent.
And, when the time comes, St Barnabas is there at the end of people’s lives so they can die with dignity in a warm and caring environment. For most, this is in the comfort and familiarity of their own home, surrounded by loved ones and all the things they hold dear. For others with more complex needs, end-of-life care is provided on our inpatient unit.
Our care also extends to families, who are offered ongoing bereavement support as well as opportunities to come together and celebrate the lives of their loved ones at remembrance events.
It is thanks to the generosity of the local community that all of this is possible. It costs more than £10 million every year to provide hospice care for local people, with only 22% of this coming from government funding. You can show your support by fundraising, volunteering, taking on a challenge, playing the St Barnabas House lottery, or leaving a gift in your Will.
Corporate partnerships are also a great way to work together to raise your business profile and fundraise for us – through strategic partnerships, events, sponsorship and in-kind support. By getting involved, you can help achieve social responsibility goals, engage and motivate your staff and ensure you participate in the wellbeing of your community.
