£5raised of £11,550 target by 1 supporter

Weʼve raised £5 to Refurbish a derelict large building, in a very impoverished community in Zambia. To be used as a school/ community skills training centre.

    Sussex, England
Funded on Monday, 6th August 2018

    What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

Following our visit to the Vision Foundation in Kalulushi, we discovered a derelict building formally used by the Red Cross and now standing very much idyll. After a detailed inspection, we came to the conclusion that this building could be used to serve the community in all sorts of different ways.

    The building

The building measures approximately 40 m long by 25 m wide and 6 m high. It also has several rooms to the side, which could be used for separate functions.

The building itself is structurally sound but needs a new roof (see appendix A), new windows, some doors and a sanitation block. We consider that this building would bring enormous social and economic benefits to the whole Kalulushi community if we can restore it to a fairly high standard.

    Our vision

We have come up with several ideas as to how we can utilise this building to benefit the whole community:-

    Week days:

During the morning, the main hall (refer to appendix B) could be used as a classroom for those children in the area whom are too poor to attend mainstream school. For that purpose, we will employ some local teachers. During the afternoon and evening, the same space can be used for adult education whilst the side rooms have the potential to become part of a skills’ training centre and to accommodate women tailoring classes, a health clinic (including teaching of first aid), carpentry workshops, and so on.

During the weekend, the main hall could be used for cultural and social activities like drama, dance classes. There would also be much opportunity for the provision of sports including basketball, volleyball, badminton etc. It would also make an ideal venue for community meetings, weddings, and other social activities, which have the potential to generate some income for the community or the upkeep of the building.

The Kalulushi Community is very excited about having the building as a community centre and will be providing volunteers to clean the area inside and outside the building as well as assist with the maintenance of sports pitches situated outside, only a very short distance from the building.

    Cost of refurbishment

The cost of refurbishing the building will be in the region of £11,550 broken down as follows:

    - Roof materials £5,000

    - Toilet sanitation £1,500

    - Timber purlins £1,000

    - Windows (glass) £ 1,000

    - Paint £900

    - Doors £550

    - Professional labour £1,600

The use of this community centre would greatly help in transforming this whole community and benefit many thousands of people in years to come. It is for this reason that we kindly appeal to your generosity to help us with the refurbishment of this school and community centre.
