Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
At 19, I was diagnosed with a genetic condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Type III (now known as Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) This connective tissue disorder affects almost every part of my body from my autonomic system (which regulates body temperature, heart rate) to my mobility. For reasons as yet unknown, it causes chronic, severe pain and walking is incredibly difficult for me. I oftentimes need to use a walking stick to aid my walking or, my partner pushes me in a wheelchair on really bad days.
This means that I am unable to live totally independently and my partner drives me around (and pushes my wheelchair) when he's not hard at work teaching primary school children. I am pretty much house-bound from Monday to Friday and it's soul destroying. There is nothing I would love more, than to be able to drive myself to town and maybe try and get a part time job in a vintage shop or antique shop. I haven't been able to work for years - I ran my own vintage clothing business for a few years and absolutely loved it, but my health got progressively worse and I couldn't sustain the business on my own. I need something to keep me going; something to keep me connected to the real world and a mobility scooter would do just that.
Why am I crowdfunding for this? Surely the NHS can help? or the Motorbility scheme? Unfortunately, there is no help available from the NHS or any scheme (that I know of) that loans out mobility scooters for free, or subsidised to people that need them. Also, the government believe that when an adult chooses to live with their romantic partner, their partner is then obliged to take care of that person financially - two people on one salary. This is a whole other issue, but to say I cannot be financially independent is the truth. Because money is so so tight, we have one car between us (which I cannot drive, as I can only physically drive an automatic car) so I am left to fend for myself all day every day. There are only so many shows on Netflix to watch before I end up feeling like I need to get out of the house.
Therefore, I am here, asking you, to help make my dream a reality. Anything you can donate will go towards the cost of purchasing a mobility scooter that can take me to town and back and a ramp so I can get it down the step to my house. Any other extras I will happily pay for over time, but I simply cannot gather enough together to pay for a whole scooter. Every pound matters, so please give if you can, it would mean the world to me. Thank you, Beth x
