What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

Cumbrae Community Development Company [CCDC] manage the Public Toilets on the Isle of Cumbrae and are appealing to the general public for support to keep these facilities open for the foreseeable future.

Cumbrae Toilets face an uncertain future after North Ayrshire Council decision to close many of the toilets in their region as part of their austerity measures. As is happening up and down the country as Local Authorities struggle to balance their budgets.

Mr. Michael Bertram, the CEO of CCDC stated “That after managing these public facilities for two years, we now have a good grasp of the financial needs to operate and maintain these community assets and we anticipated a shortfall of £10,000 by January 2020.”

Mr. Bertram informed the Board of Directors at their September 2018 Board Meeting that the Company had received £73,722.55 so far in grants, donations and from collection tins to date. £65,000 of these funds were received as part of the asset transfer from North Ayrshire Council.”

Mr. Bertram added that with running costs of £ 48,519.82 incurred thus far over the past two years, which included water and electricity costs, maintenance, repairs and consumables.

Deborah Ferris, Chairperson of CCDC stated “We desperately need more funding to keep all our public toilets open for the future of the island.”

The public toilets are at Cumbrae Ferry Slip, Fintry Bay, West Bay Football Field, Pierhead, Garrison House ‘Bomb Shelter’ and Croc Rock. Disabled amenities are available at Cumbrae Ferry Slip and Pierhead.

Pierhead toilets are only operating on a month to month lease, at present North Ayrshire Council, while decision are taken on the future of the Millport Pier.

There are also public toilets within Garrison House which include baby changing and disabled facilities.

Outside Media Group [OMG] were engaged to develop a website and a Just Giving page. OMG are developing QR codes which will be displayed at all the toilets giving a direct link to the page and make it easier for visitors to donate to this cause.

CCDC have collection tins in most of the businesses in town and continue to ask that the general public give generously, so we can continue to provide our public toilet service for many years to come.

The Isle of Cumbrae public toilets were taken over by CCDC from North Ayrshire Council on Saturday, 1st April 2017 under community ownership and management. Michael Bertram stated that “Cumbrae Cludgie Cleaner has certainly boosted Millport’s tourism with her enthusiasm, Facebook page and quirky Bog Vlogs”.

Millport’s Newton Beach was Ayrshire’s sole winner of the 2017/18 Scottish Beach Award Scheme run by Keep Scotland Beautiful and more recently Millport was awarded the accolade of Hidden Scotland’s Most Beautiful Town for 2018. These awards were judged in part on cleanliness and facilities, without toilet provision we would lose these wonderful accolades.
