Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
I was recently accepted by Harvard University to study International Education Policy in the 2018/19 academic year. The course perfectly combines my passion for tackling educational inequality and my desire to learn about the challenges that are faced in education systems around the globe. Ultimately my aim is to work towards a world where children have more equal access to life enhancing opportunities regardless of their socio-economic background.
From the age of 12, my Mum raised me and my two brothers entirely independently. For many years she was really struggling for money: although she was working full time, her salary was only £13,000 and so she relied on working and child tax credits to help her pay the bills. She and my little brother had to share a room for a number of years until we saved enough money to put a wall in the main bedroom to make enough bedrooms for all of us to have our own. She worked hard every day to make sure that we never felt the effects of her financial situation. For example, although we were eligible for free school meals she never claimed them and continued to make us packed lunches every day so that we weren’t made fun of at school for ‘being poor’.
Despite everything that I have been through, I was determined to ensure that I do not let my circumstances defeat me or define me. I was offered an academic scholarship with almost 100% bursary to Stowe School for my A Levels and continued to work hard throughout Sixth Form which resulted in me attending Oxford University for three years. At university I was fully self-sufficient and relied on loans and bursaries, on top of working full time in most of my holidays, in order to pay for tuition, accommodation and living expenses.
The truth is that with my upbringing, and the fact that none of my family had ever been to university, my life could have been very different. However, I was determined to strive for a better life.
My personal experiences, as well as all that I have witnessed in time spent working and volunteering with disadvantaged children, sparked my passion to be a leader in education and work towards a society where no child is deprived of opportunity due to the socio-economic circumstances.
The costs of studying and living come to over $80,000 for the year, which is extortionate. I have already managed to secure a needs-based grant from Harvard, and Temple Brown Consulting are sponsoring me, through their Opportunity Levy, for the rest of the costs towards tuition, health fees and accommodation. However, I still need to raise money in order to pay for food, travel and general living expenses. I have managed to save some money and will continue to save until I go, however I don’t have enough to last me the year.
Any contribution you could make would be greatly appreciated. Any money that in in excess of what I need after completing the year will be donated to Street Child: a charity that aims to create educational opportunity for some of the most vulnerable children in Africa and Asia.
