Story

My name is Naomi, I am 39 and I am a single mum of two girls (who also have needs, and I will write about them later). I am High functioning Asperger's, I have OCD traits and suffer greatly with my anxiety. Over the years I have also been suffering with chronic depression with self-harm tendencies and mood swings. I have many medical conditions such as super-ventricular tacicardia, vaso-vagal syncope, tempro-mandibular joint dysfunction, asthma, scarred lungs, pectus exervartum, migraine with aura, angina, polycystic ovaries, haemangioma in the liver, gall bladder stones, double periclavical right kidney, sciatica, and degenerative osteoarthritis - damaged lumber L3-L4. Most recently I have had blood clots in my legs and lungs and now on Warfarin and due to my mobility issues, I have been told I will be on these probably for life.

All of this means I am on numerous medications throughout the day, the sciatica and the back issues, me I am in constant pain, I cannot walk without walking aids anymore, nor can I sleep laying completely flat. I had recently had a second opinion up in London about a possible operation and I have be told that this is NOT an option for me. My back will only get worse and I am no longer the person or the mummy I use to be. I can no longer get in and out my bath, I have to sit on my toilet to wash and even getting up the stairs is an issue. As time goes by, I can see I won’t be able to do the stairs. My daughters are fast becoming my carers.

My eldest daughter Leigh, she is 18 and is autistic and has emotional dysregulation, depression and self-harm tendencies. which means her mood can change very quickly at the drop of a hat. one minute she is up the next minute she is down. one minute she is all hugs and kisses, then it’s all punching walls. Leigh needs a lot of watching and guidance as she does not cope well emotionally. She needs constant reminds about how to look after herself and how to keep herself safe. Leigh benefit a lot from sensory areas. something we struggle to provide with the lack of space at home. I am hoping with the adaptions we can allow for a sensory area to help Leigh calm and sooth herself, rather than resort to harm.

My youngest daughter Lucy, she is 14 and is high functioning Asperger's, she also has abdominal migraines, blood clotting issues, vaso-vagal syncope, blackouts and fits/seizures. Lucy has been suffering with unknown seizures for 8 years now since she was smashed in the front of the head with a garden statue in a shop. We never know when these are going to strike, and each episode are different. After each seizure, it affects her behaviour and memory. She loses the moments before and after the seizure and her behaviour can go off the scale. For example, she has tried to throw herself out a window, down stairs and even tried to stab me whilst I slept, but she can never remember these. She is doubled in pain with her abdominal migraines almost daily and is constantly feeling like she is going to faint due to the vaso-vagal attacks. Lucy is very hyperactive with her aspersers and needs a lot of attention and watching.

We all currently live in a small 2-bedroom house and really both the girls need their own space. They do not get on at all and where they are both on the autistic spectrum they do not understand each other’s needs, and this is making everything in the house 100 times worse. it stresses me out and because I am ill and now disabled after a road traffic accident almost 2 years ago, there is only so much I can take. there is no doubt about it, it is making me ill.

Ideally the girls need their own room, and there just is not enough housing around. Therefore, I would like to raise the money to convert my loft into a third bedroom for my eldest daughter and split the main bedroom to make a sensory area, add a stair lift or lift to aid me to get around my house and to fit a shower, or even better a wet room so I can actually wash properly.

All of this will give me and my children a much better quality of life, at the moment, we are trapped in arguments and fights and it is making us all ill.

If you can help us even just a little, it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Naomi :)
