Story

Please Support the Ringwood Centenary Lantern Appeal

Objective : To mark the Centenary of the end of WW1 with a permanent Memorial Lantern, uniquely designed to fit the Town Gateway Building. It will be lit each day that a member of the armed forces from our community has died, in past and future conflicts, serving our country.

In 1914 WW1 started.

In 2014 a lantern (a spare from those used in the high street at Christmas) was placed on the outside of the Gateway building.

By the end of the war in 1918, 111 Ringwood people had been killed in active service (53 died in WW2)

In 2018 this unique lantern will recognise their sacrifice.

The Design: The lantern is based on a kneeling soldier holding a WW1 trench lamp and will be seen whichever way people approach the Gateway building. Ian Parmenter, an award winning blacksmith, has been commissioned to create the lantern in hand forged stainless steel eliminating the need for ongoing maintenance. Work is underway.

Costs: The whole project will cost £5,000 including manufacture and installation and commissioning. Donations will be held by the Council, who will of necessity (since the building belongs to them and other stakeholders) manage and oversee the project together with volunteers. All monies raised will be ‘ring fenced’ solely for the use of this project.

Please Support this Project - from this funding page and other ways of adding funds to the 'pot' £1500 has been raised - a further £3500 is needed

Every penny counts and is very welcome. Thank You.
