Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
I recently visited the Tries of Campbell Children's Centre, just outside Kampala, Uganda, which supports 55 orphaned children. The charity provides aid in areas such as education, healthcare and meals, as well as providing a caring, supportive and nurturing environment for the children as they grow. This service Is provided by 5 local mothers and a Charity Director.
The orphans are housed in 4 small rooms within a school grounds (for safety). This is where they eat, sleep, learn and play together as a family. They sleep in bunk beds, often having to share because there are too many children for the space available, as well as very limited available resources. They each have just a few belongings to their name, and have to share any clothes that are available to them. There are no TV's, playstations or phones; they would be lucky if they even had one item they could say was really their own.
There are occasions when a child becomes sick, and the centre cannot afford a doctor, let alone the medication needed to make them better. Because of this the kids end up suffering for long periods of time, sometimes developing longer term illnesses which affects their capacity to work and earn in the future. There is no welfare provision in Uganda.
I found witnessing these inequalities very difficult, and really wanted to do something to help. I know that they pay a huge amount of rent for the school premises. I want to raise money to help them buy their own land, build their own orphanage and start growing their own crops and rearing their own animals. With the money they save on rent, they will be able to buy the children more clothes, medicines, school stationary, and basic supplies such as bedding, mattresses and personal care items. It may even be possible to send some of the older ones to secondary school.
A plot of land has been identified, and the cost of this, plus the material and labour needed, is estimated to cost around £7000. Please help me to change things at grass roots level for these desperately needy children. There will be no 'middle man', the money will go directly to the children. Thank you x
