Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

Hello, My name is Tina Ogden and I am the General Manger of Yarm Martial Arts Academy and Director of Evolve Children Educational Programmes. We are a community academy and have over 500 local Students studying martial arts and participating in our children's life skills classes. In 2017 we decided to upgrade our safety equipment and install a defibrillator after hearing how many lives have been saved by having a defibrillator installed on site. The fundraising started with bake sales and Evolve children (ages 2-5) completed a sponsored 2K run around Preston Park raising an impressive £500! We were nearly at our target, when we thought, why stop here ?
We then discovered that Yarm itself has no public access defibrillator. Our town and the community are a very important part of our business and and we were surprised that such a beautiful and popular town such as Yarm has no public access defibrillator.
Our original intention was to purchase and install a public access outdoor defibrillator for the community mounted outside our academy. It quickly became apparent that the time it would take to get to our academy from West Street back to the High Street made the defibrillator considerably less effective in a time crucial life or death situation. There was now only one option left...we needed two defibrillators, one for the town and one for the academy !!
The only option left was to try that little harder and keep fundraising
We arranged a charity day for March 3rd this year. The planning took a lot of time and effort by all staff and parents alike. As a team, we decided that any surplus funds would be donated to the CHUF Foundation. Then the snow came, West Street was blanketed in snow and ice, and the event needed rescheduling. We quickly rescheduled the event for June 9th, giving us more time to get the word out to the local community and local businesses for support.
The event was a success and such a fantastic day for the community. Our Demo Team performed throughout the day, along with fun inflatables, face paints, tombola and a superb raffle! In total ,with all our fundraising efforts combined, we managed to raise £2515!
Two defibrillators were now obtainable; knowing that all the hard work paid off, gives us such pleasure! We do hope its never needed, but knowing that they are there to help the academy and the community is a great comfort to us all.
The cost of the Defibrillators had risen considerably when we came to ordering from "The Defib Pad" and it took us over what we had raised leaving us with no funds to support the CHUF Foundation or upgrade our in house safety equipment. "The Defib Pad" were very generous and gave us a discount for purchasing both machines. This enabled us to make a £100 donation to the CHUF foundation but no funds left to provide our students and our community with further safety equipment.
Continued funds needed for:
1) The Defibrillator Installations by qualified electricians approximately £300
2) Annual Maintenance costs which entail system checks and parts upgrade bi-annually cost approximately £200 per year.
3) Funds over and above these costs to be used to sponsor community
In summary, the reason for this page is to give the local community the chance to help support the instillation and upkeep of the equipment and also to build a fund that can be used to sponsor life saving courses here at our academy in central Yarm.
If you are in the position to help us, even a little, we would be very grateful!
Thank you !!
