SMA is a genetic disease that affects motor neurones. 1:40 of us is a carrier and in its most severe form children rarely live beyond 2 – making SMA the leading genetic cause of death in babies and toddlers. The SMA Trust is solely dedicated to funding research into a cure and treatments for SMA

Story

Welcome to the Team Octavia SMA Trust Fund Raising Page

In 2011 Team Octavia raised over £264,000 as part of the original Momentum ADventure (MAD) campaign that continues to this day with many other teams continuing to raise vital funds for research into Spinal Muscular Atrophy. A list of the brilliant challengers and their pages are below.

October 2015 - Octavia is now at Southampton University reading English and has just attended and spoken at the SMA Muscle Power Dinner held at the Underglobe in London. We are raising funds for a new initiative called The SMA ‘Muscle Power’ Research Consortium.

This is a challenging research program lead by Professor Kevin Talbot from Oxford University. The objective of the SMA ‘Muscle Power’ Research Consortium is to improve the lives of people with SMA by recruiting the UK’s strongest mind. The creation of this Consortium brings together our brightest scientists on a dedicated three-year program, working on novel therapies that will improve the quality of life of those living with SMA and other related neuromuscular diseases. Oxford, Newcastle, Sheffield, Edinburgh Universities will collaborate to deliver the £1m+ program funded by the SMA Trust.

 What is The SMA Trust?

The SMA Trust is the only charity in the UK dedicated to raising funds for research into Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). SMA is the leading genetic killer of toddlers and babies. SMA affects the motor neurons in the spinal cord, causing muscular weakness, severe disability and premature death. 50% of the most severely diagnosed cases result in death by the age of two. 1 in every 40 people carries the gene that causes this disease (around 1.5million people in the UK).
