Story

Why We Run: Fighting for Every Heartbeat

Alongside heart disease, strokes and vascular dementia, high cholesterol remains one of the UK’s biggest health challenges. Nearly 1 in 2 adults in the UK has raised cholesterol — often without knowing it — increasing the risk of serious heart and circulatory conditions.

At HEART UK – The Cholesterol Charity, we believe nobody should lose their life too soon to something that can be understood, managed and treated. That’s why our incredible #TeamHEARTUK runners are taking on the iconic London Marathon 2027 — raising vital funds, spreading awareness, and helping more people take control of their heart health.

Every mile run and every donation made helps HEART UK continue its lifesaving work, including:

Supporting people and families affected by high cholesterol and inherited conditions such as familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH)

Raising awareness of the importance of knowing your cholesterol levels

Providing expert information and support

Educating healthcare professionals on early detection and treatment

Campaigning for better diagnosis, care and prevention across the UK

Meet Our Marathon Heroes

Every member of #TeamHEARTUK has their own reason for running.

Some are taking on their very first marathon challenge. Others are returning to the start line after catching the marathon bug. Many are running in memory of loved ones, while others are supporting friends and family living with high cholesterol or inherited conditions like familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH).

Together, they are helping HEART UK shine a light on the importance of heart health and lowering high cholesterol — a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes and vascular dementia.

Hear From #TeamHEARTUK

"Thank you for the most incredible opportunity! I never thought I’d say I would enjoy running a marathon but it was the most amazing experience and I feel so proud to have raised money for such an incredible cause!"

— Pip #TeamHEARTUK 2026

“Thank you for such an incredible experience. It’s been life changing – from the training to race day, and seeing how amazing the volunteers, organisers and charities are. I’m in awe.

I think the way you’ve looked after us as a running group has been first class. The class of family 25 feels like a real family.

Thank you again for such an amazing opportunity – I’ve got the bug.”

— Dr Jamie Whitehouse #TeamHEARTUK 2025

“Thanks so much for the opportunity – I may reach out to do it again! (Against my better judgement)

I had a great time for most of the run – it got tough towards the end, but it’s not meant to be easy!

The HEART UK cheer point just before Tower Bridge was brilliant – and the crowds the whole way round were incredible.

So pleased to be part of the team raising money for a super important cause.”

— Andy #TeamHEARTUK 2025
