Story
I have been in racing since I was about 11 years old and started riding out every day before school for David Nicholson (The Duke).
I met my husband Martin at The Dukes' and since he started training himself in 2007 I have seen how a charity like Racing Welfare can provide help for individuals in difficulty with timely advice, encouragement and guidance and sometimes even financial help.
A little help can often make a big difference. Work in the racing and thoroughbred industry is not compulsory but can be compulsive, fueled by passion and commitment. For those looking after the racehorses especially it can be tough physically and psychologically; registered stable staff for example have a 1 on 4 chance of becoming an official accident statistic in any one year and wear and tear readily accumulates over time.
Racing Welfare is able to go beyond statutory and industry provision to provide social, practical and financial support to current and former staff that may be in need….that is with the help of generous people and their charitable donations.
I have been encouraged to do this race as it just so happens to fall on my 40th Birthday and I not only wanted to raise money for this great charity but also it gives me a personal and much needed goal to get fit again and, in doing so, lose weight! My boys, Freddie & Harry are 6 and nearly 4 years old and are very much enjoying doing the local shows and pony club on their ponies - both still on the lead rein this will hopefully aid my fitness as they are quite competitive!
